Review of Hamburger Hill (1987) by Rob L — 22 Apr 2010
A decent, realistic war film that makes one wonder what all the fuss about Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers is all about, given it was released a long time before those. Themes include incompetence, lack of motivation and the deployment of lower class Blacks and Whites to provide cannon fodder for America's fading dream.
Contemporary to Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now and Platoon, it's one of a raft of Vietnam pics that brought the war and US foreign policy heavily into question after a decade or two of cant. And yet, sympathy for the soldiers themselves is still very strong - protestors back home are heavily criticized by implication.
