Review of Halloween: Resurrection (2002) by Mirabella 1 — 13 Jan 2010
Why don't we look at the Halloween franchise, like opposite ends of the spectrum shall we? In one corner, we have "Halloween", one of the best horror movies of all time, and certainly one of the best movies of all time. it was brilliant in it's execution, Carpenter's vision was so well crafted, and so grotesque in nature, yet done so beautifully. It was a landmark achievement for film as we know it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have this. "Halloween:Resurrection", which is undoubtedly the worst Halloween film ever made. It doesn't deserve the title that it presents to us. It takes what was once a brilliant concept, and has now made it a pop culture extravaganza, with people like Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks ATTEMPTING to act. It's so disappointing. Sometimes I like to think that this film never existed....but it does...and it sucks.
The premise of this film, is literally one of the worst I have heard. Again, let's go back to the original film. We have Michael Myers. At a young age, he kills his older sister and is locked up in a mental institution under the care of Sam Loomis. After years of waiting, he waits for one Halloween night to escape and go after his other sister. His goal? Kill her. It was fantastic. Now by using the spectrum theory again, I can return to this movie. What could possibly be the antithesis of that? How about this. Camera's are set up in Michael's house, and DANGERTAINMENT (an online horror show) attempts to film "reality" but then realizes that Myers is actually in the house. When I saw this movie....I was waiting for some kind of nostalgic reference to the previous movies, are maybe some kind of innuendo.....but NO. This movie is ridiculous. The only time we are actually reminded of the previous movies, is when one of the girls finds a picture of Jamie Lee Curtis. THAT's IT. No mention of Loomis, or any of the other characters. It was a stupid plot, and they didn't care whatsoever and that's why you got a movie like this.
The acting in this movie sucks. It just plain sucks. The lines that we hear now, are all pop culture lingo, something that should not be in a Halloween movie. It's really depressing to see some of the lines that go on hear. Busta Rhymes doing karate? Are you kidding me? That can just sum up the whole film. Him doing karate. I mean....it's inane. When Moustapha Akkad looked at this film...what was he thinking. "Oh it's sure to be a hit!" Wow...not even a little bit. And another thing to mention is what the hell was Rick Rosenthol doing? Didn't he make Halloween II? I mean that wasn't a very good film, but it's amazing compared to this....
It's just so pathetic. With such a wonderful film at one side, and such a terrible film on the other. As said before, I like to think that this movie doesn't exist. But you know what? "Halloween:Resurrection" could actually be a lesson to some franchises out there. If you keep making sequel after sequel after sequel from a brilliant made film, and gradually get worse and worse....then eventually your going to end up with something like this. And that's certainly something to avoid.............
