Review of Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) by Jason D — 30 Aug 2009
Aside from Stephen King's It, director Tommy Lee Wallace has a knack for taking great horror films and attempting to continuing on their legacy with an ambitious sequel only to really botch things up.
He did it with Carpenter's Vampires sequel, the Fright Night sequel, and ESPECIALLY with Halloween 3. Halloween 3: Season of the Witch a Halloween mask making company that plans to kill millions of children with their masks on Halloween night.
It's up to Tom Atkins (the quintessential badass of the 80's) to try and save the day. Aside from a preview of the original Halloween, which shows up on a TV in a bar in one scene, there is ZERO connection with the previous 2 films, and as a result, all attempts to take the Halloween franchise in a different direction failed miserably.
In fact, Halloween 3 was and is continually met with great disdain and backlash from horror movie fans, including myself at one point. Upon revisiting the film at a more adult age, Halloween 3 manages to be a rather entertaining and somewhat decent 80's film, however, it just bugs the hell out of me to see it with that title.
Honestly, if this film went under a different name, I think I would give it a higher rating (a pretentious though on my part that I'm somewhat ashamed of), however, as a Halloween film, it really takes the series off course.
Still, I urge all Horror movie enthusiasts to watch this film and try to take it completely away from the Halloween franchise and simply observe it as just another horror film from the 80's. You might find yourself surprised by how moderately decent it is.
