Review of Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) by Jody B — 18 Oct 2009
I break the Halloween franchise into 5 segments:
1 The Jamie Lee Curtis Laurie Strode trilogy (1,2, and H20).
2 The Jamie Llyod/Thorn Trilogy (4,5, and 6).
3 Rob Zombie's Vision (The two remakes).
4 Halloween 3 (non-Michael Myers sequel).
5 Halloween Resurrection.
As a part of the Halloween franchise, I give this entry a 20%, and historically, I am known for publicly bashing this film.
What I previously stopped to consider was the original intent of this film. SPOILERS OF HALLOWEEN 2: As far as Carpenter and Debra Hill were concerned, Michael Myers and Dr. Loomis are dead from the explosion in H2. They wanted to churn out Halloween-themed horror stories. They were done with Michael.
END SPOILERS.
Because this concept was poorly marketed, and audiences went expecting to see our boy in the white mask, it was a failure.
So this year, I decided to watch not "Halloween 3" but rather a film called "Season of the Witch". I put out ofmy mind any real connection and watched it as just another horror movie from the 80's.
And for the first time, I liked it. Never thought I'd say that, but I liked it.
Violence towards little children is often shied away from in cinema, and now with children myself, I realized how frightening and f'ed-up the concept of this film truly is.
Even as a standalone horror film, it deserves a "C" at best, and whoever wrote that damn jingle I am pretty sure has a special place reserved in hell for them.
The best thing I can compare it to is Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. In the end, when I take it for what it is rather than what it should be, it's not such a bad little movie.
