Review of Halloween II (1981) by Dutch V — 14 Mar 2010
I honestly find it hard to notice any dip in quality between this one and the original--both films are TERRIFIC!
(the TV-VERSION of HALLOWEEN II is a total dud / zilch though-very, very bad).
The film-stock is "cleaner" and there's more gore.
Well, you know HALLOWEEN (1978) is actually a rip-off of DEEP RED (aka PROFONDO ROSSO); so, the "face-melting-in-the-jacuzzi" scene is almost identical to the "face-melting-scene-in-the bathtub" scene in PROFONDO ROSSO.
From the account related in the EXCELLENT and very-comprehensive documentary, HALLOWEEN: 25 YEARS LATER, HALLOWEEN'S producer, FRANK YABLANS saw PROFONDO ROSSO (aka DEEP RED-THE HATCHET MURDERS) at a grind-house theater on 42st.
FRANK YABLANS needed to pay-off some dept and imagined making a film like DEEP RED-THE HATCHET MURDERS yet calling it THE BABY-SITTER MURDERS.
THUS, the HALLOWEEN-theme by JOHN CARPENTER sounds a lot like the PROFONDO ROSSO theme-song and a few scenes in both HALLOWEEN (1978) and HALLOWEEN II (1981) have clearly been inspired by scenes in PROFONDO ROSSO.
HALLOWEEN 25 YEARS LATER is a must-see documentary; worth every penny. (it was priced the same amount as the actual DVD of HALLOWEEN).
