Review of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) by Walter M — 09 Nov 2011
By ignoring the last 4 films and making a sequel to Halloween II, Halloween H20 is actually pretty decent. The problems that I had with the ending of II remain, but the filmmakers did what they could with that story-line and managed to make a movie with some actual suspense.
There were also several moments of humor that worked well. The downside is this is still a rather dumb movie, with plenty of cheap jump scares and other nonsense. In the end, this entry owes more to Scream than the movie that started the series.
Indeed, if this had come out without the name Halloween attached, it would be easily forgotten as a Scream rip-off. Despite these shortcomings, this is easily the best entry to the Halloween series since the original, and an entertaining distraction.
At the very least, it's not a movie someone should be totally embarrassed to enjoy (more than I can say for the rest of the sequels). Score: 6/10.
