Review of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) by Justin A — 22 Oct 2014
Jamie Lee Curtis keeps it entertaining, even during the slower parts of the movie. She clearly was excited to be apart of this and put an end to the series (more on that later). She gives a good performance and is the strongest part of this movie.
The opening is really good, even if typical 90s slasher type of stuff. The movie then drags a lot, especially when focusing on Josh Hartnett and Michelle Williams and the other characters not named Laurie Strode that nobody cares about. The movie is also very "nineties". This can be clumped more closely to the other 90s slashers like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, than to the older Halloween movies. It's the same basic formula as those movies.
There are also many references to Psycho. In fact, there are probably more nods to Psycho than the original Halloween movies. In fact, this movie ignores the events of 4, 5, and 6. I know Psycho is sometimes argued as the first slasher movie, but I always saw Halloween as being influenced by Black Christmas and little to do with Psycho. The references are nice since I love Psycho, but it was feeling like a bit much.
This is probably the most uniquely different Halloween movie out of the entire series, mostly because of how it is made. Yes, it was 20 years after the first movie, but it feels like a very different era than Curse of Michael Myers, and that was only a few years later.
This is the Laurie Strode movie. It has more to do about her than Michael Myers. The middle of the movie drags, but the ending is fantastic. I haven't heard of anyone disliking the ending, and most agree it was the perfect way to end the series. If remakes and reboots were more popular around the time of this release, I would assume they would have followed with a reboot instead of the lame movie Resurrection.
As it stands, H2O (which is a lame title) is probably the last Halloween movie worth watching, and that's only because of the perfect ending.
