Review of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) by Trevor C — 24 Oct 2011
Despite being a perfect example of a horrible horror movie sequel, this film does have it's good moments of suspense, no matter how disappointing the pay-off may be. It's a film that seems to be more of a build up than a reintroduction. The way it ends is the only truly rewarding experience that this film brings up, simply because it so unexpected and horrifying. It's really a film for the die hard fans only, or fans of films that attempt to be scary but end up being unintentionally funny (except this is a definite improvement over the previous film which didn't even have Michael Myers as a threat).
Of course this film, despite ending in a fashion that (like all the other films with Myers) makes you believe that Myers is gone for good, gives a certain sense of hope for a new breed of killer - though the sequel to this (Revenge of Michael Myers) kills that terrifying hope or sadistically brilliant ending to this very film. They could've brought the series back instead relying on a figure for his pure iconic appearance. They had at least tried to do that with the 3rd film, but the reason that failed is simply because of its over the top quality. This film offered a complete save from what was already becoming a rehashed franchise.
Visually this film has its good moments, but that doesn't make up for its lack of plot.
