Review of Halloween (2018) by Ethan L — 21 Oct 2018
Halloween isn't like most of the recent horror movies that have came out for the past few years. Michael Myers, who was terrifying three decades ago, is now, once again, terrifying. The movie starts with these two terrible reporters confronting Michael at his insane asylum. They pull out his murder mask, and all the other psychotic inmates have panic attacks at the sight if the mask. This scene alone sets up the tone of the movie. This shows that these already insane, psychotic people are terrified of this man, and because of that it's pretty terrifying to see them screaming and flipping shit. Of course, Michael escapes and murders quite a few people, and of course this sets Laurice off and she starts to freak out and try to protect her grandchild and her daughter. Seeing Laurice on edge throughout this entire movie is actually a very good thing to show, because in every other movie she's in, she has always been the person who was been strong and willing to fight. Anyway, blah blah blah, let's get to the meat and potatoes of the movie: Michael fucking Myers. Michael has jumpscares, I'm not going to say that he doesn't, but the majority of this movie is him being in the background, barely noticeable, and he starts to slowly move forward and closer to the victim. It's genuinely terrifying. Sometimes you can see his shadow and then he comes out of nowhere and stabs someone in the fucking neck. Laurice fighting Micahel in the final act was also set up so perfectly, I was in awe in the theaters. The cinematography accompanied by the soundtrack is the best I've seen in a while as well, and finally, I am going to go bakc to the earlier parts of the movie. When Michael finds the reporters, I was genuinely scared. The last horror movie that actually truly petrified me was IT (1990) and I was 6 when I originally saw it!
Yes, I have talked about the strengths of this movie, but there ate a few things that had gotten on my nerves to be completely honest. The first thing that annoyed me isn't exactly a big deal, but I really would've liked to have seen Michael wrecking the bus and escaping. Of course, this doesn't make the movie worse, but it's just me being nit-picky. Also, the characters are very, very, very stupid. Like literally retarded at some parts.
