Review of Halloween (2007) by Keith W — 17 Dec 2012
A new retelling of the Halloween legend by Rob Zombie. We finally learn why Michael Meyers became the relentless killer he ends up being. The first 40 minutes are super detailing Michael's family life: his abusive step dad, his tramp of a sister; and the bullies at school who harass him daily thanks to his mom being a stripper. It all comes to a head when Michael is not taken trick or treat by his sister and becomes unhinged. After killing most of his family save for his mom and baby sister, Michael is placed into an asylum watched over by Doctor Loomis. But for 15 years no treatment of any kind will help and Michael escapes and heads back home to Haddonfield. And that's where the movie comes off the rails. It becomes another standard teens chased by a pyscho killer flick. And Zombie stages some of the exact same scenes John Carpenter did 30 years ago the same way, albeit bloodier. Anway there are strong performances by Malcolm McDowell as Loomis and a startling turn by Sheri Moon as Michael's mom, who proves she has more range than playing the pyschotic Baby Firefly from Zombie's first two films. All in all, this new update is good, and fills in the blanks very well, but Carpenter's version is still the one to beat. Nice try by Rob though. Oh one personal gripe, other than the girl playing Michael's younger sister, every other actress playing a high schooler looked about freakin 30. I don't know what's up with that.
