Review of Half of a Yellow Sun (2013) by Amilcar A — 12 Jul 2014
Africa. What a tragedy that continent has gone through for doe many years. Human devastation, anarchy destruction, loss of natural habitats. It's hard to watch.
Half of a Yellow Sun is an interesting story about the Nigerian independence and the Biafran "experiment". It's relatively well chronicled and while not a history lesson, there is something we can learn from this movie.
For me it was pretty illuminating since my knowledge of Eastern African history is pretty much non-existent. I was pleased and found the movie entertaining and intelligent.
What this movie lacks is more depth with the crisis and more connection with the victims. The story is too focused on a relatively well connected and privileged family so their misfortunes, while real, at times feel a bit optional since they could have fled.
In the grand scheme of movies, this is a middle of the road, more interesting than average but also largely forgettable adaptation from a book.
