Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Nick S — 01 Sep 2008
Though it is not without it faults, I really enjoyed this film. Shareeka Epps in particular came across as natural yet vibrant and proved easily to be the most interesting character within the film. Gosling turns in a great performance also, though at times I think his character came across as too much of a sleazebag in order to really draw any sympathy.
There's only so much you can take of his constant turning to drugs in order to make himself feel good again, and until the film's closure we see no hints that he is ready to clean up his act or at least make a go of it.
Another issue I have is the running time of the film, which I feel it could've been condensed slightly better. Those gripes aside, the performances and natural look and feel of the film make this a treat.
3/5.
