Review of Half Nelson (2006) by John C — 21 Jan 2009
This is one of those films that has been on my list for a long time. 'Half Nelson' is the low budget brother of 'Requiem for a Dream'. The style and fast pacing are absent, but both movies are successful in showing the downward spiral of drug addiction.
Ryan Gosling was deservingly nominated for Best Actor as his portrayal of Dan Dunne, a high school history teacher whose habit slowly dissolves his ideals and judgment. The slow pace will turn off many people, but those who stick with 'Half Nelson' will be rewarded with a great, yet harrowing, film.
