Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Deena R — 22 Jun 2009
Ryan Gosling's portrayal of a charismatic and unorthodox history teacher, who also happens to be a drug addict on a downward spiral is simply phenomenal. This gritty, compelling drama revolves around an unlikely friendship that develops between Gosling and one of his students (Shareeka Epps), a street-smart teen whose mother works long hours and whose brother has been jailed for dealing drugs.
Although one may feel uncomfortable watching this story unfold, it is an intense examination of the human condition that delivers poignant social commentary. A beautifully crafted film by fledgling writer/director Ryan Fleck.
