Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Darryl L — 28 Dec 2009
The only thing worse than an Edward-James-Olmos-Lou-Gossett-Junior-type high school movie is, it turns out, a Ryan-Gosling-type one. In the first case, a no-nonsense principal/teacher finds a way to get through to his inner-city kids and the kids win-the-big-game/graduate.
In the latter case, a druggie teacher lives in a depressing apartment, is being harassed by creditors, and falls asleep in a locker room toilet after smoking his drugs. This movie is more depressing, slow, tedious and uneventful than a Murder She Wrote marathon, were any cable network foolish enough to air such a thing.
I'm giving this movie 1 star instead of half a star because the actors appeared to have memorized their lines.
