Ryan Gosling delivers a perfect performance as a drug addict, history teacher, intertwined in a young student's life, played wonderfully by Shareeka Epps. Acting at a caliber of actresses twice her age, Epps handles herself with grace and ease as the female lead of the film.
Anthony Mackie makes big waves, playing a character that you are probably not supposed to relate to, but he is so likeable in his role that it is hard not to like him. The situations are subtle, the music is entrancing, and the emotions are natural and real.
