Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Jens T — 23 Jan 2009
Sincere and unusual take on drug addiction, short on plot and shot in that kind of low key verite style that more usually comes with subtitles. The two leads are excellent, though the film itself strays towards worthiness at times and maybe pulls its punches towards the end.
I felt ambivalent about the movie for long stretches - perhaps similar to the way one feels about the main character, a 'good' person, but with an addiction that renders him selfish and unreliable.
Worth seeing for Gosling and Epps' performances and because it IS different. But for the 'kid gets drawn into the world of drug dealing' storyline, you're still better off with Season 4 of The Wire.
