Review of Half Nelson (1985) by Jake S — 01 Jan 2009
The first time I watched it, I had some of the complaints seen below. Half Nelson is a slow film. It does have an abrupt ending. But at the same time, it is cinema at its finest.
The abrupt ending is exactly it. It is a movie that says clearly, life is about give and take. No problem can be resolved overnight, everything is a battle. We see this in development of Drey, we see this in the historical interludes, we see this in the Dan. It is beautiful construction and hits its theme with grace.
The fact that the movie also contains Gosling's tour de force is just gravy. In capturing this from Gosling, we see Fleck has ability, although I wouldn't say the direction is amazing throughout.
