Review of Half Light (2006) by Eugenia R — 03 Jun 2009
This should be titled, "Danielle Steele's Half Light". I had hope that this would be an interesting Celtic-themed ghost story. Well, it's actually a fairly predictable, long-winded romance novel set in Scotland that happens to feature a little bit of ghosty goodness.
I'm sick of films like this where the main character experiences the loss of a loved one and a quickie fling romance is supposed to make it all better. By coincidence I was watching Sleeping With the Enemy the other night on TV and I had the same reaction.
It's utterly insulting to women to imply that a new romance will sweep away all the shit that's going wrong in their lives. I don't know as I've ever seen this same message in a film that features a male protagonist.
I give it two stars basically for some great cinematography and the beautiful setting. But that only further angers me. How do you blow the chance to make a fascinating, beautiful horror film based in Scotland? I had no complaints about Moore, though I fail to understand the appeal to her as nothing about the character feels particularly special or intriguing.
