Review of Hairspray (2007) by Jennifer N — 07 May 2012
Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) is an overweight teenager who dreams of appearing on a local teen dance program. Tracy eventually realizes her aspiration, but things turn sour when she realizes how the program is tainted by 1950's segregation.
Hairspray, originally a odd film by John Waters, was adapted into a successful Broadway musical that eventually served as the basis for this film. Like a lot of movies based on stage musicals, this film is stilted, bland, lifeless, and a chore to sit through.
It also hurts that it's completely devoid of the endearing kitsch that animates most of Waters' better movies.
