Review of Hairspray (1988) by Shay Shayz M — 03 Oct 2008
The year this movie came out I was a few years out of high school, I didn't know much about John Waters' movies or his favorite leading lady, Divine. However, I found this movie, funny, satirical, and it had an important message and it was brow-beaten into your head - I'm talking about acceptance (in the form of integration).
Ricki Lake in her very first film held her own with the cult-favorite, Divine and veteran comedian Jerry Stiller as her parents. And, later as I came to watch more of Waters' works I realized he has a knack for compiling some of the most unique talent that most writer/director's would not dare, to cast.
Who else could get away with casting Deborah Harry (lead singer of Blondie), Ric Ocasek (lead singer of The Cars), Sonny Bono, Pia Zadora, and Waters' regular Mink Stole. 10-times better than the 2007 John Travolta remake.
See this one first.
