Review of Hairspray (1988) by Michael B — 15 Jun 2012
The only innocuous film John Waters has ever directed without becoming routinely monotonous (not even Johnny Depp salvaged Cry Baby from mediocrity). Ricki Lake, is the pleasantly plump adolescent Tracy Turnblad who dreams of dancing on a local television program.
Debbie Harry and Sonny Bono are the bigoted and scheming parents of her blonde rival who will do anything to become miss auto show 1962. Divine's last role as Edna Turnblad is not as deliriously depraved as his earlier roles, however still memorable.
Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora are drugged out beatniks and Ruth Brown is Motormouth Maybelle of negro day....when Tracy pushes a political agenda of racial integration all Hell breaks loose.
