Review of Hairspray (1988) by The Critic ( — 08 Sep 2013
John Waters' oddball caper always has its heart in the right place as charming and cheeky protagonist Tracy Turnblad (a very likable Ricki Lake) fights for social justice whilst becoming a role model for "big, blonde and beautiful" girls in her Baltimore community.
Littered with colourful sets, costumes and supporting characters (of which Joann Havrilla and Leslie Ann Powers easily steal the spotlight), 'Hairspray' is a consistently entertaining and engaging ride.
