Review of Hairspray (1988) by Peter S — 17 Feb 2017
This is a good, good film. Perhaps John Waters's most well known and best, and easily his most accessible, film, this is just about being yourself and doing what you love. Since the film takes place in the 60's, there are heavy themes of segregation and being discriminated because of your weight.
Also, it's not a musical, that's the 2008 version. This is more of a romantic comedy dance film. The actors are excellent, and the singing and dancing is top notch. Even though it can be a little hard to watch because of the racism, it all ends too happy, like how a musical should, and unlike most of John Waters's films.
You'll probably be underwhelmed if you've already seen the 2008 version, but it's definitely worth checking out regardless.
