Review of Hair (1979) by Gretchen E — 19 Jan 2009
"Hair" is one of the lucky musicals that has managed to stand the test of time. It could be because of the timing of the Broadway production in the late 1960's, when the hippie movement was still thriving.
The way it takes a piece of American history and blows it up to a frenzy of interesting people, eccentric clothing, and a sound that captures the soul. Although the film was released a decade after the debut of the stage production, Forman manages to take all the best parts of the musical and add to what audiences were not able to see onstage.
Better outfits, better visuals, better actors, better vocals, and much better music. Truly a must-see for any Broadway junkie, and certainly for anyone who is a hippie at heart.
