Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Max L — 11 Mar 2016
I have very mixed opinions about this movie. On one hand, there are some very funny scenes, but on the other, there are others that try to be funny, but overstay their welcome. On one hand you have charming moments that develop character, but others that are meandering, meaningless and irrelevant.
the biggest flaw in this movie is its lack of focus. It seems like 4 subplots trying to come together into a whole, but they are all so dissident and irrelevant to each other that nothing comes together.
The Actors they got are CRIMINALLY underused. Scarlett Johansen? She's in 2 scenes. Jonah Hill? 1 scene! Channing Tatum? 3 scenes. However, major props to the actors, especially relative newcomer Alden Ehrenreich, who utilize every second of screen time they get to its fullest.
Some great performances, but the meandering plot makes it hard to get invested in the characters. Overall, a pretty underwhelming film in the Coen Brothers canon.
