Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Seán C — 22 Mar 2016
This is a conservative film. The white male in charge and is wise and to be followed. Clooney's speech about Jesus' humility is the fraud, a fake happy ending to a fake happy film. This of course is in keeping with the deep cynicism of the Coen Brothers.
It is also apparent in their treatment of the Communists, who are hypocritical, ineffective, and mostly comical. The ultimate symbol of this is when Tatum chooses his dog over money to be donated to the party.
Yet, I like this film. It was smart, funny, and a loving tribute to a long dead era.
