Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Matthew H — 29 Apr 2016
This was an overall disappointing effort from the usually brilliant Coen Brothers. I'm not sure what they were trying to make here? Despite a top-notch cast this film falls flat in nearly every scene, despite some wonderful homages to 1950's Hollywood and some great production design.
Josh Brolin is horribly miscast as the lead, and many characters and sub-plots that are setup to be part of the film's web of intrigue end up doing nothing and going nowhere. Neither particularly funny, nor is it particularly clever - but its not terrible either.
Sits in an unusual No-Man's Land. 2 stars for potential.. but mostly, it's pretty 'meh'.
