Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by James R — 27 Jan 2017
Thoroughly enjoyed this one! It took me awhile to get to this one and I guess maybe the overall mixed reviews had me worried about it. The movie is probably one of the better Coen comedies to come out because I found myself laughing quite a bit during this one.
The movie follows Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) a studio fixer that makes sure that everything is running smooth on the Hollywood lot he is in charge of. He covers up scandals and makes sure that the actors and directors know their place.
We follow one crazy day for him which involves the kidnapping of star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), covering up a pregnancy from actress DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson), and having newcomer Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich) fit in into a non-western role.
There's a lot of funny moments here and I enjoyed how I felt the movie never takes itself too seriously. There's some really great homages to old musicals and movies from the 40's and 50's scattered throughout the film with some really magnificent set pieces.
I will say it all wraps up just a little too nice at the end, but that's a small gripe. Definitely, recommend giving this one a look if you haven't caught it yet.
