Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Rey T — 12 Jul 2016
My wife called "Hail, Caesar!" esoteric and then left the living room. That was 25 minutes into the film. It only becomes more esoteric as it goes on. At least I can understand how some audiences will love it, and certainly the performances were wonderful.
The film seems like part love letter to the so called "golden age" of cinema and part vanity project for all involved. It rarely seems like a good comedy or a movie with a good story. What little story exists is broken up by short vignettes of old timey hollywood movies that all end with the gritty real world of filming a hollywood movie.
If you pined for a good old western, water movie, romance, homo-erotic musical, or sword and sandal flick, then "Hail, Ceaser!" has everything you love.
