Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Matthew H — 22 Feb 2017
I do not understand the appeal of this by-the-books WWII flick. Literally the only memorable thing about it is the over-the-top violence, which Gibson leans into so hard you would think he is trying to undermine the conviction of his protagonist.
Or is he trying to criticize while placating a violence-hungry public? Or his own obsession with carnage? It's unclear. And that's the problem.
