Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Jake M — 27 Jun 2017

Well... after I have spent 19 years of my life hating Mel Gibson and he's finally made a five star movie. Hacksaw Ridge is the biggest surprises of 2016, and forget all of the other times you've heard me say that because this time I mean it, this truly was a surprise.

Hacksaw Ridge tells the untold true story of Desmond Doss who saved 75 men in the bloodiest battle of WW2 without firing or holding a weapon. Andrew Garfield gives so far his best performance playing Desmond Doss, which is great because I didn't think he was going to go any where after the Spiderman films.

However though his performance was good the best performances in this film were Sam Worthington and believe it or not Vince Vaughn the two of them definitely stole the show here, which honestly for Vaughn is great due to the fact that True Detective season 2 was disappointing.

And Teresa Palmer was also great in this film as well though she's really only in for the first half of the film, and ignore what I said in my Lights Out (2016) review when I said that was her best film because thats wrong this film is her best film.

I hesitantly give credit to Mel Gibson as well because honestly I really liked the way he directed this film because the style is gritty yet uplifting and I loved the intensity of the film there are moments were you literally feel like your at this battle.

...not bad Gibson... not bad. Now what I liked most about this film was that it showed that you don't need to kill to be considered a hero. There was only one problem I had with this film and I really don't want to spoil it for those that didn't see it so I am not going to but even that one minor problem I had with it doesn't stop the fact that its a perfect film.

With films like Hacksaw Ridge and Hidden Figures all I can say is 2016 has been a year of movies about important people in history who we don't know which is great. Hacksaw Ridge is a raw, gritty, and violent film that still manages to be uplifting if your a fan of war films especially ones like Saving Private Ryan (1998), and Flags of Our Fathers (2006) than go watch this movie you won't be disappointed, and if Gibson makes more films like this maybe one day I'll become a fan of him.
