Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Ian B — 01 Feb 2017
I thought that this was a fairly solid directorial effort from Mel Gibson, that though flawed at times, is ultimately a well made picture. First the flaws for me; the faith element to the story felt heavy handed at time and repeatedly pulled me out of the film, I understand that it was a big part of the character's life and motivations, but it felt to me that Gibson was repeatedly hitting us over the head with it.
One scene in particular was a shot near the end of the film, of Andrew Garfield's character where it was shot to look like he was floating to the Heavens. But, speaking of Garfield, he was the standout here.
His performance carries the film and kept me invested in what is ultimately an interesting story. The action scenes are well shot, yet extremely violent. I can see people often disagreeing on this film as it contains many polarizing elements from Gibson directing, to the extreme violence, to the faith element.
I suggest you just watch it and decide for yourself.
