I felt Full Metal Jacket and the first 30 mins of Saving Private Ryan portrayed what I imagine to be the horror of war without resorting to gore and splatter - in fact the drill sergeant scene was a direct rip off of FMJ - no doubt an interesting story of a very brave guy.
