Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Peter B — 30 Mar 2017
If done right I can be a sucker for cheese in movies. In the case of Hacksaw Ridge I felt very underwhelmed at first, but it gradually won me over. The first hour is quite mediocre, it's very schmaltzy.
If it weren't for Vince Vaughn and Andrew Garfield's likability I probably wouldn't have cared for the rest of the film. BUT... after we get to Hacksaw Ridge, into the heart of battle, the film becomes kind of amazing.
The battle of Okinawa is portrayed extremely brutally and terrifyingly. The way this last hour-or-so was directed I felt was kinda brilliant, the feeling of immersion with some real tense moments completely sucked me in.
Also this is where Andrew Garfield really got to shine, he was fantastic.
