Review of Hackers (1995) by Absar S — 17 Sep 2008
Well, it was relatively decent for the time...The actors could have been worse (in some cases I think they outshone the actual film)- the writing was at least somewhat decent and the characters and plot somewhat believable- even if the technological details are completely outdated (or amusingly fabricated/exaggerated) and the believability fairly low...or alarmist even.
I think it was a good try at appealing to youth and hacker culture at the time- I think it is only embraced by computer geeks now because of A. Nostalgia and B. How hot Angelina Jolie is in this movie...I mean smoking hot- and I'm not a Angelina Jolie fan really...Johnny Lee Miller doesn't look bad in a tight red dress either...does that sound gay?
The set up for this was decent, and the soundtrack kicks ass. Overall- the movie grates against plausibility and suspension of disbelief- primarily for the over the top graphical representations and complete fabrication of an overly dramatic youth/hacker coalition. But hey "Hack the Planet" is STILL a battle cry today or something- even if it is meant to be ironical.
