Review of Hackers (1995) by Skye E — 30 Sep 2011
The problem that everyone has with this movie is that it's not realistic.
The problem with that is that it wasn't TRYING to be realistic! Its aim was to depict onscreen the world that William Gibson and Bruce Sterling were depicting in their cyberpunk fiction through the eyes of the kids that were reading those books.
The references abound - the supercomputer is called a Gibson, the plague refers to hackers as "keyboard cowboys" (a common Gibson term), and the aesthetic and soundtrack are pulled straight out of Gibson's endlessly fascinating depictions of Tokyo nightlife.
If you're looking for a realistic movie about computer hackers, watch the Kevin Mitnick documentary (which I highly recommend). If you want some teenage-fueled cyberpunk, you're in the right place.
