Hachiko is a pretty great movie, if you understand that is very strongly based on a true story. The only thing that's really changed is that it is put in a modern setting, everything else is pretty much the same, right down to the career of his owner.

I would imagine that most, if not all, of the bad reviews are from those who are upset by the sad nature of the story.
