Review of Gypsy 83 (2001) by Courtney W — 18 Feb 2005
My 99 cent cupons came in handy yet again on wednesday as my friends and I had movie night. Sometimes 99 cents supercedes your first impression of a film. For example--I never cared to see Taxi with Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah, but putting a reasonably cheap price tag on it made me think twice..
.
It was okay. But it was a little bit silly that Jimmy Fallon was a cop who couldn't drive well and has his liscence revoked and Queen Latifah was a former bike-messenger turned cabbie with a pimped-out ride. It made me laugh, but if I paid $8.50 for it at the theatre, I don't think I would have appreciated it as much. Don't even get me started about the Portugese model bank-robbers led by Giselle Bundchen..
.
Our favorite line had to come from Jimmy Fallon, "You didn't see my nads did ya?".
.
Then we watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, for which we really rented to see Angelina Jolie with an eye patch. It was a little disappointing that she clocked in about 15 minutes of screen time. I don't really like Jude Law OR Gwyneth Paltrow, so that kinda set me back. .
.
However, it was cool that the CGI was not overpowering and that it looked like an old movie that had been colorized (something that I personally find to be a travesty--I like black and white films; but for some reason really didn't bother me about this film because it was made to look that way). The visuals were really great and had that retro-feel of the thirties and what people back then thought that the world would look like in the future..
.
Oh, and I totally dug Sir Laurence Olivier as the big, giant head. Comeback of the year! Considering he has been dead for 15 years. It was awesome!.
.
Lastly, being the Stevie Nicks junkie that I am (I literally have a rule--if Stevie Nicks would wear it so would I), I had to rent Gypsy 83. It's about Gypsy (Sara Rue) and her best friend Clive who live in drab, small Sandusky, Ohio in 2001. Gypsy wants to be Stevie Nicks and Clive dresses like Robert Smith from The Cure; both of them dance in cemeteries and live the ultra-goth lifestyle. For this and the fact that Gypsy is "overweight" and Clive is gay, they are outsiders..
.
Gypsy yearns to be famous and get out of Sandusky. They both hear about the "Night of A 1,000 Stevies" in NYC and decide to pile into a 1979 Trans-Am and take their chances on the road. I thought it was a nice little movie and I thought they both looked great in the costumes. Sara Rue's clothes were so great that I coveted them. For the longest time, I have refused to cut my hair because I wanted it to look like Stevie's. When I saw Fleetwood Mac in concert last year, I cried like a baby when she and Lindsey performed "Landslide." And I don't cry at concerts. .
.
"To the gypsy that remains,.
she faces freedom with a little fear,.
I have no fear,.
only love...".
--Fleetwood Mac, "Gypsy".
.
Laters!.
