Review of Gymkata (1985) by Chris H — 28 Feb 2008
Throughout the ten minutes it took to write this review I was conflicted. How do you review a movie that is terrible but yet, still amazing?
Do I base my review on it's entertainment factor or it's quality? This question is enough to make me resort to alcoholism. But as you can tell, I gave this movie 5 stars. Because at the end of the day, gymnastic/karate fighting and a plethora of flag ninjas deserve their merit. Besides, I feel bad for movie snobs who base movies only on their quality and attack those who haven't lost sight of what movies are truly meant to do; and that is entertain and teach us about life and the perspectives of others.
Besides this movie deserves 5 stars solely on the fact that Kurt Thomas is a motherfucker no one should mess with. Also, any movie with a pummel horse routine/fight scene is oscar worthy.
[EDIT]: In retrospect, I was totally wrong on what a movie's true purpose is. A movie doesn't have to be anything besides a moving picture. Hell if my previous statement was correct then that means that this movie would have tought me something, which is by no means true. I already knew that ninjas love flags.
