Review of Guys and Dolls (1955) by Alisha R — 27 Mar 2008
What is the deal with Brando? Really, I don't get it. Excluding Vito Corleone and Stanley Kowalski, there's nothing moving about his acting. He always seemed like he was performing for himself and in this movie, his character did not connect with me. He definitely was brilliant in his acting, but it seldom felt natural and more rehearsed. Not only that, singing + Brando cannot be. Frank Sinatra-there's our singer- was actually in the movie, but it essentially was The Marlon Brando Show.
About the movie itself: long, I zoned out a couple of times; nonetheless, the songs were entertaining and smart. It had one of the funniest bar brawls I've ever watched and costumes were slick, made Brando a bit cool.
