Review of Guru (2006) by Parvez A — 10 Jun 2007
This is by far not a perfect movie. It finds it way into my top selection because it represents a new for Bollywood cinema - the biopic. And in that regard it fares well. Its biggest flaw, however, is that it paints the life of industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani in the broadest of strokes and does not take the time to venture into the details. Side plots like the love story of Vidya Balan's character also take away from the scope of the film. Above all else is that it showcases brilliant performances by Mithun Chakraborty (who knew the Disco Dancer could act?!), the usually wooden Aishwarya Rai, and of course Abhishek Bachchan. In a role large enough for his father's shoes - Abishek shines. While Abishek has delivered strong performances in recent outings here he has screen presence.
Oh and A.R. Rahman's soundtrack is amazing!
