Review of Gummo (1997) by Andrew T — 21 Jan 2009
This is a Harmony Korine film - and probably his best. Although lacking any clear story line, images are strong and artistic. Filled with strong performances from it's amateur cast, Gummo contains some relatively shocking and controversial scenes.
The main characters spend time killing stray cats, visit a intellectually disabled prostitute, and shoot a comatose elderly lady in the foot with their BB guns to find out if she'd wake. Child actors involved in swearing etc can at times make the viewer wonder if Korine is just trying to shock his audience.
The Bunny Boy, although he never speaks, is one of my favourites - as is the 'Just like a Prayer' work out scene.
