Review of Gummo (1997) by Raghul R — 21 Apr 2013
Disturbing, strange, brutal, disgusting, ugly, violent, poetic, pointless, depressing, fascinating, surreal, profound. This film is some of the highest art set to film. It doesn't attempt to make a moral point or to take a viewer on an emotional tour of self-discovery.
Gummo is beautiful in it's own grotesqueness and makes no apologies for it. It's interesting and provocative in the abstract. A window into a strange and surreal world that may or may not truly exist.
Who can forget the images that will forever stick with you, such as Solomon in the bathtub, or the powerful end scene as bunny boy runs up to the camera to display a dead cat. Gummo is unforgettable, and a beautiful masterpiece in it's own.
