Review of Gummo (1997) by Ashily B — 21 Mar 2009
When I first saw Gummo my reaction was a prototypical: "I spent $27.99 [i]on that?"[/i] The movie seemed disgusting, pointless, and even cruel. I didn't understand why anyone would produce it.
But later, I was drawn back to it. And re-watched it, almost with the intention to make myself enjoy this movie I spent so much time tracking down.
Ultimately, Gummo will appear bizarre to anyone raised on a steady diet of mainstream cinema. Actually, it's bizarre in any case, but it's a beautiful sort of bizarre that few can appreciate. It's honesty is startling, completely naked in the light of an age made primarily of costumes and green screens. It is the rebirth of cinema, and Harmony Korine is playing the part of Andy Warhol.
Odds are you won't like Gummo, but for the few that do, they understand the beauty of the bizarre.
