Most movies are like books, some are like poems. Harmony Korine's depiction of childhood apathy and malaise in a decrepit rural town plays more like a list of words. The negative reception, I do not condemn, but I, as my rating shows, definitely do not condemn the movie itself.

For the purposes of photography and atmosphere, this movie is fantastic. But these arent stand alone things, at least they arent supposed to be. A chess set can look absolutely sublime, but if the game isnt played it falls flat.

That aside, if you dont expect entertainment or something to think about, which for most people is what a movie is, then you might really like Gummo. I recommend it, for the sheer experience.
