Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by Jonathan B — 28 Jan 2009
Overall, I was not impressed with this film and it did not strike me as living up to its reputation as a classic. There were some very good aspects to this movie, Sidney Poitier was very good as were some of the smaller characters, and I do give it a lot of credit for addressing a taboo subject (in 1967 at least, and in some areas today).
But some of the things the characters said and did boarded on the ridiculous and a lot of the dialog was hammed up. Also, Katharine Houghton was unbearably annoying (at least this was her only real film).
I kind of felt the same way about this movie as I did Gentlemans Agreement, where the sudden realization that Jews could be just like Christians was such as shock to the main character that it ruined the film for me.
