Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by Kevin N — 20 Mar 2009
The screenplay really plays near the edge of melodrama, but thanks to a headstrong cast of powerhouse actors it becomes something much stronger, much more poignant. Sidney Poitier is electric, bringing a controlled intensity to each one of his scenes- whether they be of love or war.
Katharine Hepburn fits her part like a glove; her finest moments here are where she says nothing at all, her natural elegance and gentility speaking loud and clear. Spencer Tracy is almost frustratingly sympathetic as the stubborn but caring father who stands firmly as the conflict of the film.
Kramer masterfully compiles every shot, blocking his actors with careful precision and making a film which looks truly beautiful without ever being flashy.
