Review of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) by E L — 28 Jul 2012
While the movie has many monologues and the message seems obvious, with some rather artificial and improbable construct (whirlwind romance, a character with almost unbelievable amount of accomplishments, black or white), it is acted with supreme skill by all involved, in the context of the times, it is a highly remarkable film for such a direct tackling of various contemporary taboos.
It may seem dated and preachy to some today, but sadly such prejudices still linger on despite the "modernity" of our age. The recent film "Crash" tries a similar direct approach to racism in America but is less successful due to its overstated performances and lack of the same sense of hope and optimism.
