Review of Guess Who (2005) by Hatem A — 06 Feb 2011
1.5/4.0.
"Guess Who" is a defamation of the great 1967 movie "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner", upon which it is loosely based. This romantic comedy spin off of the 1960s drama shifts genders where we get an African American woman falling for a white guy.
Theresa (Zoe Saldana) takes Wall Street rising star boyfriend Simon (Ashton Kutcher) who just resigned unbeknownst to her to meet her parents at their 25th wedding anniversary. Her mother Marilyn (Judith Scott) is fine with the interracial romance but it is her banker father Percy (Bernie Mac) who takes the matter too hard and keeps a close eye on the boy. I am supposed to say hilarious situations ensue but they just don't. Unfortunately, I didn't even laugh once at this predictable material and the actors (Kutcher and Mac) try too hard to be farcical but it just doesn't work. Passable entertainment at times but that is all!
